Yomogi -The forests of Aibetsu Town
Mugwort has long been cherished for both its edible uses and skincare benefits.
Rich in vitamin C and polyphenols, it is known for supporting rough or dry skin while helping retain moisture.
The mugwort used in our skincare is wild mountain mugwort harvested from the forests of Aibetsu Town, Hokkaido, under the care of forester Hiroto Fukuyama, who is dedicated to forest conservation and regeneration.
By using mugwort collected through sustainable thinning, we help preserve the forest’s natural balance and beauty.
BRAND STORY
Our roots in mugwort skincare trace back to SHIRO’s predecessor brand, LAUREL.
In 2011, we collaborated with Yoshikawa Foods in Sunagawa City, Hokkaido—SHIRO’s birthplace to create the sozai LAUREL skincare line using Hokkaido-grown mugwort.
Steam from boiling mugwort was used as distilled water in face masks and lotions.
Mugwort paste (originally for mochi) was repurposed into bath packs, scrubs, and soaps.
This spirit of creatively reimagining natural materials continues in SHIRO’s current craftsmanship.
A Legacy Continued
In 2022, following SHIRO’s rebranding, we launched the Oil Collection Mugwort Oil.
Then in 2024, using freshly harvested mugwort provided by Mr. Fukuyama, we introduced the seasonal “Yomogi Oil in Water”, which sold out immediately after launch.
From Weeds to Wisdom: A Sustainable Vision
Mugwort possesses remarkable vitality. Growing quickly, covering the ground, and often being cleared to make space for newly planted saplings.
Through our collaboration with Mr. Fukuyama, we’ve been able to repurpose what was once discarded as “weed” into a powerful skincare ingredient.
Mr. Fukuyama doesn’t only look at the trees in front of him. He envisions the entire forest ecosystem, plants, animals, and future generations and is committed to preserving its beauty for decades to come.
